URBANICS

Granville Island Development and Impact Studies

Date: 1977 to 2023
Client: Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation

Urbanics was the principal creator of the Granville Island concept and was involved from the initial planning stage through the development and implementation. Our firm conducted the market and financial feasibility studies for this major redevelopment program. Urbanics was also involved in providing input on lease renewals, re-merchandising, additional facilities (such as the Kids Only Market and parking structure), and general operations.

Granville Island is located in False Creek directly across from Downtown Vancouver, beneath the Granville Street Bridge, and was formerly a derelict industrial area. It has undergone substantial redevelopment and become a major destination for both locals and tourists, with a unique mix of specialty retail, public market, restaurant, institutional, cultural, office, industrial, arts and crafts, hotel, marina, and performing arts venues. The Granville Island Economic Impact Studies involved examining the economic impacts of the Island from a taxation, employment, and proposed investments perspective. Urbanics has been called upon to provide updates and recommendations on this site to the federal government and CMHC over the past four decades.
